Callpoint's National Street Intersection Database

Introduction

This dataset (also known as the Street Junction data, Cross-Street database, Intersecting Street or Street Corner dataset) is a comprehensive dataset of street intersections for each State across Australia.  The dataset is created by Callpoint based on PSMA spatial data.

How can it be used?

The database enables simple querying to find all the intersections of a particular street in a given locality.  For example, querying for King St within Sydney yields the cross-street search results below.

The blue dots below are a spatial representation of the latitude-longtude coordinates in the above table.  The dots are overlaid on street vector data from the PSMA Transport & Topography dataset.

What other columns are available?

These include for both Street #1 and Street #2:

• A Street Suffix code e.g. N,S,E,W
• The Locality PID (Persistent Identifier), common to both the PSMA Transport & Topography and G-NAF datasets
• The Street Line PID, sourced from Transport & Topography
• The G-NAF Street PID, to ease back-end IT system integration with G-NAF
  
  
  

Example applications

The dataset is designed to meet the needs of Outdoor Service Providers who are seeking to avoid wasted time/ missed opportunities or better assist their constituents.

(1) Outdoor Service Provider

A person is in a geographically unfamiliar area.  Possibly, it is night, raining and the surroundings are poorly lit.  Time is of the essence.  They know the name of the street they are in.  Using their mobile phone, they contact the needed service provider and the call centre operator asks for the nearest street number.  The caller indicates that they cannot determine the nearest street number but can advise the nearest street intersection…

(2) To assist geocoding:

As is well known, G-NAF is Australia's authoritive geocoded address dictionary.  G-NAF includes comprehensive latitude-longitude coordinate data, being for premises e.g. 167 Queen St Melbourne.  G-NAF is extensively used for geocoding, being the extraction of latitude-longitude coordinates for a given address.  Situations arise however where the supplied address is expressed as for instance "corner of Queen St & Bourke St Melbourne".  The task of geocoding street intersections is facilitated using our dataset.

(3) Finding the nearest cross street:

Given a street address, what is the nearest cross street/ street corner?  This question can be answered by using G-NAF in conjunction with Callpoint's street intersection dataset.

How is the dataset created?

Callpoint creates this dataset using its geospatial software processes that operate on PSMA Transport & Topography street polyline data.

The dataset is updated following the PSMA data update schedule, typically quarterly.

What are the licensing arrangements?

The Street Intersection dataset is available for internal business usage.  The customer also requires a license to G-NAF for the same number of seats/ geographical territory.  For further details please contact us.
